Constructomics, LLC is shopping for subcontractors on the RFK Hall Gym locker and shower room renovation, with associated asbestos abatement, at CUNY Queensborough Community College in Bayside, Queens. Its ad on the New York State Contract Reporter, CR#2139386, wants sub bids by October 13. That's one day before DASNY, which is running the job for the college, opens prime bids on October 14.

Here's why this ad is worth more than most. DASNY picked its bidders in two rounds. Firms sent in expressions of interest, the agency shortlisted the ones it judged qualified, and only those firms got the request for proposals. Nine firms sit on that short list, and Constructomics is one of them. DASNY also says the drawings on its website are for reference only, and the finalized bid documents go to the qualified contractors invited to bid. So the real set goes to the invited primes, not the website.

The scope is one prime contract covering general construction, HVAC, electrical, fire alarm, plumbing and hazardous materials abatement. All of it happens in an occupied building, and the contractor schedules and coordinates every trade. DASNY puts the construction estimate at $8,000,000 to $11,500,000. The low bidder has to sign the project labor agreement in the contract documents, so know what that means for your crew before you put a number on paper.

Now the goals. DASNY lists 18% for minority-owned businesses, 12% for women-owned businesses and 6% for service-disabled veteran-owned businesses, plus a 45% minority and women workforce goal for all trades. If you carry one of those certifications, put it at the top of your quote. On a short list, every prime is chasing the same goals, and a certified sub who prices clean helps whichever prime it quotes.

The ad as it sits on our board doesn't spell out which trades Constructomics wants, so ask. Get your number to Constructomics by October 13, and ask for the final bid set, not the reference drawings.
