Privacy Policy
What we collect, what we do with it, and what you can do about it — in plain words.
Who we are
The RFI Wire is a construction newspaper for New York, published by The RFI Wire LLC. This policy covers therfiwire.com, The Punch List email, reader accounts, and the alerts that come with them.
What we collect
- Your account. Your email address, and — if you choose to give them — your name, company and trade. There is no password: you sign in with a link we email you, or with Google.
- What you do when signed in. The bid records, project pages and stories you open; the bids and stories you save; and the alerts you set, in your own words and as we parse them. This is shown to you on your account page, where you can clear your reading history at any time.
- The Punch List. Your email address, when we sent to you, and whether an email bounced, was opened, was clicked, or was marked as spam. Our email provider reports these back to us so the list stays clean.
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics, which sets cookies and records pages viewed, approximate location, device and browser. We do not send Google your name or email.
- The reading meter. If you are not signed in, your browser keeps a small counter of the records and stories you have opened in the last 30 days. It lives on your device only; nothing about it is sent to us.
- Messages you send us. Contact forms, replies to our emails, classified listings and advertising orders, including what you type into them.
How we use it
- To run the paper: send the editions you asked for, match new bids to your alerts, keep your saved items and history on every device you sign in on.
- To understand what the paper is used for — which agencies, trades and sections readers actually open — so coverage follows readers, not guesses.
- To reach you about the paper and its own products: the newsletter, alerts, classifieds, advertising, and a print edition when there is one.
The plain version: the publisher can see which registered readers open what. We use that to run the paper and to know who reads it. We do not sell your information, and we do not show other readers what you read.
Who else sees it
Staff of The RFI Wire and its publisher, and the companies that run our systems on our behalf: Supabase (database and sign-in), Resend (email), Google (analytics, sign-in and spreadsheets), Railway (the newsroom's servers), Hostinger (web hosting) and Stripe (payments, if you buy something). Each holds only what its job needs. We disclose information if the law requires it. We do not sell personal information.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe from The Punch List with the one-click link in any edition, or by replying “unsubscribe.”
- Pause or delete alerts and clear your reading history on your account page.
- Delete your account by emailing therfiwire@therfiwire.com from the address on the account. We remove the account and its history; we may keep a record that an address asked not to be contacted, so that we honor it.
- Analytics can be blocked with a browser setting or Google’s opt-out add-on; the site works without it.
How long we keep it
Account data for as long as the account exists. Email delivery records for as long as needed to keep the list clean. Analytics on Google’s standard retention. Reading history until you clear it or delete the account.
Security
Sign-in is by emailed link or Google, so there is no password for us to lose. Data is stored with providers that encrypt it at rest and in transit. No system is perfect; if we learn of a breach affecting you, we will tell you.
Not for children
The paper is for people working in construction. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Changes
When this policy changes in a way that matters, we say so at the top of the page and, for account holders, by email. The date at the top is the date of the current version.
