SUNY is running a cluster of small-building fixes across its upstate campuses this week, and three of them land in the same due-date window — proof that a lot of real work gets bid in pieces too small for the headline numbers.
At Binghamton University, the College in the Woods elevator replacement is split into two separate contracts: general construction (RFI-003439, due November 6) and electrical (RFI-003451, due November 9), per the NY State Contract Reporter. That split is standard practice on SUNY jobs — one prime per trade, no general contractor sitting on top collecting a markup on both scopes. If you're an elevator contractor without electrical in-house, this is a job you can actually win outright instead of chasing a sub slot.
Same campus, same week: Binghamton also has Replace AHU in Science II out to bid, due November 9 (RFI-003450). No value estimate is posted, which is typical for these smaller SUNY mechanical swaps — it means the field is wide open for anyone willing to call the contracting officer and ask.
Roofing shops should look at SUNY New Paltz. The State University Construction Fund has Replace Roofs – Various Buildings out for bid, due November 10 (RFI-003440); bids get opened at SUCF's Albany office, not on campus. There's also a parallel subcontracting notice for the same New Paltz roofing job (RFI-005121, due November 10) soliciting sub bids directly — worth a look if you do flashing, sheet metal, or roofing demo and don't want the prime contract risk.
None of these five postings carry a published value estimate, which is normal for SUNY's smaller facilities work — the dollar figure usually doesn't show up until the bid tab. What they share is scale: single-building, single-trade scope that a shop with five or ten people can actually staff and finish without touching a bonding line much bigger than they're used to.
What to do next
If you do elevator or electrical work, get the Binghamton bid documents now — the general construction package closes November 6 and electrical closes three days later, so there's no time to sit on this one. Roofing contractors eyeing New Paltz have until November 10 on both the SUCF prime bid and the subcontracting notice; call the SUCF Albany office listed on the posting to confirm bonding and prequalification requirements before you price it, since SUCF runs its own prequalification process separate from SUNY's general contracting rules.
