Mark September 2nd. Six small state building packages — scattered from Staten Island to Rochester to Syracuse to Ogdensburg to Binghamton — all come due that day. None of them carry a posted dollar estimate. That's not an oversight. This is single-building maintenance work, the kind that never makes a headline but keeps a 12-man roofing or mechanical crew busy for a season.

Three of the six are roofs. DASNY's Hutchings Psychiatric Center job in Syracuse (RFI-001480, nyscr.ny.gov/Ads/Search) covers roof replacement and asbestos/hazmat abatement across Buildings 6, 11, 15 and 17 — but it's still an Expression of Interest, not a bid, so what you're submitting September 2 is a qualifications package, not a price. The Gardiner Firehouse roof in Rochester (RFI-001628, same portal) is a straight subcontracting opportunity — a prime is out looking for roofing subs to price the work, so if you're a roofer chasing western New York, that's a phone call worth making before the due date. And OPWDD's roof repair and recoating job at 930 Willowbrook Road on Staten Island (RFI-000236, nyscr.ny.gov) is the one closest to a normal bid — straightforward re-coat work in Richmond County.

Two more are mechanical, both through the Office of General Services and both inside correctional facilities: steam line replacement across Buildings 30, 31 and 32 at Albion Correctional (RFI-001493) and boiler controls in the Powerhouse at Riverview Correctional in Ogdensburg (RFI-001494). Prison infrastructure work like this rarely draws a crowded room — access, badging and site conditions scare off shops that don't already do state work, which thins the field for the ones that do.

Round it out with the State University Construction Fund's storefront and exterior door replacement at SUNY Binghamton — Bartle Library, University Union, and the Couper Administration Building (RFI-001512). Worth noting: bids get opened at SUCF's Albany office, not on the Binghamton campus, so don't drive to the wrong city on bid day.

None of these six will show up on a primes' radar — too small, too scattered, no MWBE or bonding threshold called out in what's posted. That's exactly why they're worth a look if you're a regional shop that can mobilize for one building at a time instead of a whole campus. The DASNY EOI is the one to flag on your calendar differently — that's a qualifications submission, and if you clear it, the actual bid solicitation for Hutchings Phase 1 comes later.
