Two active violations hit a Brooklyn elevator this week over paperwork, not a breakdown.
Per DOB Safety Violations records, 179 20th Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn (BIN 3429696, BBL 3006377504) picked up two violations dated October 2, 2026, both tied to elevator device number 3P0998617. One cites "Failure To File 2025 Cat1 Test Report" (violation VIO-FTF-VT-CAT1-202512-0000012); the other cites "Failure To File 2025 Periodic Inspection Report" (violation VIO-FTF-VT-PER-202512-0000022). Both list a cycle end date of December 31, 2025, and both remain Active per DOB's database as of this writing.
Category 1 testing is the five-year structural test for an elevator's safety systems; a periodic inspection is the annual checkup. Neither violation says the elevator failed anything — they say the required paperwork documenting those tests wasn't filed on time. DOB treats a missed filing as seriously as a missed test, because the city has no record either way that the equipment is safe until the report lands.
For the building's managing agent or elevator maintenance contractor, this is a clock problem: Active status means the violation stands until the reports are filed and accepted, and it can accumulate daily penalties the longer it sits open. Anyone doing elevator service work in Sunset Park should check DOB NOW's elevator compliance lookup for BIN 3429696 before bidding adjacent work in the building.
Separately, and in New Jersey, not New York: the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development announced on September 15, 2026 that it added eight more businesses to its Workplace Accountability in Labor List — known as The WALL — for unresolved wage, benefit, or tax law violations. Per NJDOL's own release, the list now carries 402 employers who collectively owe $37 million, and the eight new additions owe a combined $743,826.95. Any contractor named to The WALL is barred from public contracting with New Jersey state, county, or local government until the debt is paid in full.
For any GC or sub bidding New Jersey public work, The WALL is now a required pre-qualification check — a sub who can't clear it can sink a bid package regardless of price. NJDOL says it has recovered $1,241,338.32 from listed or warned businesses to date, so clearing the list is possible, but not automatic.
DOB's elevator violation lookup is searchable by BIN at the DOB NOW: Safety portal; NJDOL's full WALL roster is posted at nj.gov/labor.
