Stony Brook University advertised the construction of its Institute for Discovery and Innovation in Medicine and Engineering — I-DIME — on Thursday, sending the biggest new building solicitation on Long Island this week out to bid. The new research facility rises at the university's Research and Development Park: 61,000 gross square feet across three occupied floors plus a mechanical penthouse, holding wet and dry laboratories and a shared advanced-imaging suite. The university is targeting completion in spring 2029.

Lab buildings are a different animal from classroom or office work, and that's exactly why this one matters to a specific set of readers. Wet labs mean specialty exhaust, lab casework and fume systems, redundant mechanicals and gas distribution. An imaging suite means shielding, vibration control and serious electrical capacity. Buildings like this also live or die on commissioning. If your shop does any of that, this is the Long Island job to organize the next two months around — and GCs bidding it will be assembling exactly those subs.

The mechanics: the ad went up September 4 through the state Contract Reporter, and bids are due October 23, submitted through the university's online bid system. Pre-bid meeting details, participation goals and the official cost estimate ride inside the bid documents rather than the public ad, so pulling the documents is the first move — and worth doing early, because on lab work the long-lead equipment questions start at the pre-bid, not after award.

The timing is worth noting, too. SUNY's construction arm has kept a steady drumbeat of work on the street this year, but ground-up research buildings of this spec are rare on Long Island — the last comparable packages drew deep bidder fields, and a 2029 completion means whoever wins is booking crews through three seasons.
