Six school districts and two villages have bids closing within a three-day window at the end of September, and every one of them is small enough for a shop without a bonding department the size of a bank. If you've been waiting for the fall crunch, this is it.
Start with the deadline everyone in Nassau County already knows about. The Nassau BOCES cooperative contract for glazing services and window repair (RFI-001697) expires September 26 — today. It covers all 56 Nassau school districts on one contract, which means one bid gets you a shot at window and glazing work across the entire county for the life of the award. Two days later, Uniondale Union Free School District closes bids on a district-wide paving, site lighting, and irrigation package (RFI-002469) hitting five schools at once — Northern Parkway, Grand Avenue and Walnut Street elementaries, Turtle Hook Middle, and Uniondale High. Due September 28 at 11 a.m. H2M Architects + Engineers is the engineer of record, so the plans, specs, and any addenda run through H2M's plan room, not the district office directly — worth confirming before you assume you have the current set.
The same week, Pelham Union Free School District is taking bids through September 29 on a state-grant-funded outdoor classroom build at Prospect Hill Elementary, 1000 Washington Avenue (RFI-002463). It's sitework, landscaping, and electrical — not a big job, but state grant money means state grant paperwork, and the plan room is a $100 digital-set fee or a $100 hard-copy deposit through the REV system.
Two municipalities round out the cluster. The Village of Hempstead wants bids by September 29 on a full interior renovation of the third floor at 1 Helen Keller Way (RFI-001676) — the six-story building the Village recently acquired. Demolition, abatement, partitions, finishes, and MEP, all under prevailing wage. And the Village of Scarsdale is replacing the roof on its Facilities Maintenance Building (RFI-002594), also due September 29, also prevailing wage, bonds required — a straight roofing job on BidNet Direct with none of the complications the others carry.
One more worth a second look before you price it: the Town of Ramapo's ADA walkway at Town Hall in Suffern (RFI-001403) has two official sources giving two different deadlines. The Town's own BidNet listing says September 29; the state Contract Reporter says September 28. Until Ramapo clears that up directly, treat September 28 as the real number — showing up a day late because you trusted the wrong portal is not a story anyone wants to be in. The job itself is straightforward sitework and concrete — CSI divisions for concrete, metals, and finishes — but it carries a Div. 14 conveying equipment line, which means a lift or similar accessibility equipment is buried in the package, and liquidated damages run $1,000 a calendar day on a one-year completion clock.
None of these jobs will make anyone's year on their own. That's the point — this is where a lot of the county's small and mid-size shops actually keep the lights on between the big public bids, and five of them landing bid dates within three days of each other means an estimator with the right trades on staff could reasonably chase two or three at once. Check each portal directly for addenda before submitting, and get the Ramapo date settled with the Town before you commit a crew's time to pricing it.
