DDC topped out the Harper Street project this week — a new DOT building and truck yard redevelopment in Brooklyn that the agency is building for $121 million, with Urbahn Architects doing the design work, Scalamandre/Tully as the construction manager, and Selldorf Architects on the building's public face.
This is a DDC public-works job from the ground up: DOT owns the program, DDC runs the construction management the way it does for most city agency buildings, and the price tag puts it in the same size range as some of the bigger single-borough jobs on our own board right now.
Topping out means the structural frame is done — steel or concrete, whichever this one is, has reached its highest point. What's left is everything that makes a truck yard actually work: paving, fueling infrastructure, drainage, the interior build-out DOT needs to actually run trucks and crews out of the site.
For subs, this is the signal to start paying attention if you haven't already — topping out usually means the GC and CM are moving into trade buyout for finishes, mechanical, electrical, and sitework in the next several months. If DDC runs true to form on a job this size, expect a run of smaller bid packages to follow the way NYCHA and DASNY split their bigger jobs across our board.
There's no live solicitation tied to Harper Street on our board today. But DDC capital jobs of this scale rarely stay quiet for long once the shell is up — worth checking DDC's contract postings over the next few months for the trade packages that come next.
