The public bid board carried 418 open solicitations as of this cycle, up from 403 a day earlier — a gain of 15 jobs overnight. Eighty-five of those 418, better than one in five, still list no agency name at all, carrying only "Unspecified" in the agency field.

The rest are spread about as thin as a board can get. State University of New York postings account for 21 open bids, the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York for 16, New Jersey's Department of Transportation for 12, and the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for 12. After that the list drops fast — the Veterans Affairs Department shows 11 postings, the General Services Office 11, and from there dozens of agencies, towns, counties, school districts, and housing authorities post exactly one or two jobs each. There are more than 150 distinct agency names on the board carrying three postings or fewer.

“That gap between who's posting and who's actually closing bids in volume is the board's real shape right now.”

Bid results tell a different story about where the volume actually clears. New Jersey's Department of Transportation and its Treasury Division together account for 175 of the 1,000 most recent bid results in the system — far more than their share of open postings would suggest. The School Construction Authority (42 results), MTA Construction & Development (21) and the state DOT (21) round out the next tier. That gap between who's posting and who's actually closing bids in volume is the board's real shape right now: a long tail of small, one-off public owners feeding a pipeline where a handful of repeat agencies account for most of the closed business.

Trade tagging on open bids is even thinner than agency tagging — 293 of 418 postings, better than two in three, carry no trade classification at all. Where a trade is listed, general construction and construction-related services categories dominate, with 16 postings each, followed by a scatter of NAICS codes and single-trade tags like HVAC (4), electrical (5) and plumbing (6).

What this means for you: Watch the direction over the next few days before you change how you staff or price a bid. One day's move is a signal to check, not a trend. How we count: Open-bid and bid-result totals come from two consecutive daily snapshots of the live board, one day apart; 'Unspecified' means the agency or trade field was blank or not classified at the time of the posting, not that the agency is unknown to the record.
