The MTA's New York City Transit division posted a contract for phase two design services covering platforms and components at Grand Central Terminal. Proposals for the state-funded project, solicitation CR#2140585, are due on December 16.

This design work feeds into a larger effort to save the Grand Central Artery, a four-mile stretch serving 200,000 daily Metro-North riders that includes the terminal, the Train Shed, the Park Avenue Tunnel, and the Park Avenue Viaduct. Much of the structure supporting that artery is currently in poor or marginal condition, which threatens the reliability of the rail service.

The posting does not name a trade or an estimated value. This is a pure design contract, meaning the MTA is paying an engineering or architectural team to draft the blueprints before any heavy construction goes out to bid.

What to do next

Engineering and design firms should review the phase one documents to see what the agency expects, and submit a phase two proposal by December 16.
