Repairs to subway fan plant components - the ventilation equipment that moves smoke and heat out of the tunnels. Valued above $100 million, so this is a prime-scale job with real mechanical, electrical and structural subcontracting under it. Work covers 33 fan plant locations on seven subway lines and includes asbestos surveys and abatement. The closing date has moved twice: the MTA first advertised bids for July 8, then September 1, and now September 17, and six addenda have gone out to firms holding the documents. The pre-bid conference and both site tours were held in June, so a firm coming to this late is bidding without having walked it. Twenty-seven firms are on the document holders list. Bids close September 17.
